It’s time for some a posting of some of my more recent work. These are all real-time screenshots from a long term project of mine. The galaxy is procedurally generated, and will eventually be fully explorable, down to each individual planet. Also shown is a sparse octree created from the galaxy, which is used to help manage the level-of-detail inherent in data structures of galactic scale.

On the smaller scale, a starmap of around 45,000 of the closest stars to our sun is shown. The lines connect stars that within 2.5 parsecs (~8 light years) of each other, and Sol is highlighted in green.

Special thanks goes to Winchell Chung at Project Rho for his excellent tutorials on star mapping and rocket science.

  1. Hello, I am interested about making a Space MMO Game with Unity and was traveling over topics related to procedural generation before I found your example.

Is it possible to see more about this, having some tutorials / references / start points ?

    Thanks.

  2. Source code would be awesome i really like the last few screenshots with the lines
how did you determine line opacity?
what determines the colors for the planets (planck’s constant?)
